What’s Changed: The Fluorescent Lighting Ban
To support the UK’s push for greener, more sustainable energy use, the following types of fluorescent lighting are now banned from sale:
- T8 fluorescent tubes – banned from 1st September 2023
- CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) – banned from 1st February 2024
- T5 fluorescent tubes – banned from 24th February 2024
These bans are part of the EU Eco design and RoHS Directives, which aim to remove hazardous substances (like mercury) and improve energy efficiency.
An Important note: While these lamps can no longer be manufactured or imported to the UK, suppliers can still sell through existing stocks. Products legally placed on the market before the ban dates can continue to be sold but availability will become more limited over time.
