The town of Weybridge can be found in Surrey’s district of Elmbridge which is approximately 17 miles southwest of central London. Its name derives from a crossing point on the River Wey which flows into the River Thames. 

In 1890 Weybridge became Britain’s first town to have electric street lighting! They used incandescent filament bulbs, and the power station was capable of generating 70kW. It operated for 6 years before closing in 1896. In 1902 a new station opened with an initial capacity of 180kW which rose to 700kW before that closed some 20 years later. Since 1922 the electricity has been supplied by the Twickenham and Teddington Electricity Company.
