Why Replacing Your Old Consumer Unit Could Be a Smart Move
For most homeowners, the fusebox, also known as the consumer unit, is out of sight and out of mind. It quietly does its job in the background, tucked away in a cupboard or under the stairs. But this little box is the main hub of your home’s entire electrical system. It powers every circuit and protects your home and the people in it.
So, is it worth upgrading your fusebox? In short, yes, in many cases it is. And here’s why.
1. Planning Any Electrical Work?
If you’re thinking of having new sockets, lights, or even an extension built, it’s likely your current fusebox will come into question, and if it’s adequate.
Older units without RCD protection may not meet current safety standards. Any alterations to your electrics will usually require testing, and if the fusebox doesn’t comply, your electrician may advise a full upgrade to a modern consumer unit with RCD to allow him to proceed with planned works.
2. Still Got Re-wireable Fuses?
If your fusebox has the old-style re-wireable fuses (as shown in the picture above), that’s a clear sign your electrical installation is dated. These types of fuses are slow to react in the event of an electrical fault or hazard and don’t offer anywhere near the level of protection that modern systems do.
New fuseboxes come with RCDs (Residual Current Devices), which are devices that are there to protect you from electric shock. They're especially important if you use electrical equipment outdoors, for example, garden tools, hot tubs, or even a jet wash.
3. No Electrical Inspection in Years?
Like anything in your home, electrics age over time. If your property hasn’t been inspected and tested in a while, or your fusebox is starting to look tired and worn, it's a good idea to have it looked at. A professional local electrician can check whether your current setup is still safe and up to scratch.
4. Extra Protection with Surge Devices
Modern consumer units now come with Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) built in. These offer an extra layer of defence for your home, shielding your electrics and appliances from power surges or lightning strikes.
With more and more tech in our homes, TVs, laptops, smart gadgets. it makes sense to protect your investment.
